This universal tool can be used two ways: place the fully adjustable legs on the crankshafts main journals, zero the indicator on top of the rod journal, and spin the crank over to get the reading at the lowest point or place on top of the short block piston and zero indicator on piston at TDC, then rotate engine to BDC and read indicator for stroke length.
